The Basic Layout controls within the Main DatMapR window set a number of important parameters needed for the mapping.

A suitable Map Title and Subtitle can be defined by ticking the appropriate tick‑box and entering the required text.

If not ticked, a default title/sub-title based in the Project and Required Data parameters will be shown in the text box and used in creating the map.

The title and/or sub-title can be blank, and the map layout will then be adjusted to close up the space above the map.

The mapping Mode, i.e. 'Grid' or 'Exact', has to be defined -  the default is 'Grid' mode.

In Grid mode, data will be mapped in a grid defined by the Grid/Symbol Size. Each symbol will be centred within the grid square and will reflect the data for the square. The maximum symbol size will be this Grid/Symbol Size, but smaller symbols can be deined in the Data Bands / Symbols window varying according to the data values.

The data may already have been imported with Eastings/Northings values reflecting this grid (i.e. the south-west corner of grid squares), but DatMapR does not make this assumption. Data records will be mapped to the appropriate grid square and multiple records will be aggregated, the aggregation being defined by the Grid Aggregation box - i.e. Sum, Average, Minimum, Maximum, Count, or 'Count Distinct'.  'Sum' is the default for Numeric data, 'Count' for Text data.

'Count' will count the data records falling into each grid square, while 'Count Distinct' will count the unique values (e.g. Species Names) falling in the square.

Even if no ‘data’ fields were actually imported (i.e. the source data records just gave the location), a dummy value of ‘1’ will have been loaded in the first data field and can be counted or summed to map the number of records falling into each grid square.

In Exact mode, each data record is mapped by a symbol centred at the specified location. The Grid/Symbol Size is then used to define the maximum symbol size in terms of map grid units. Smaller symbols can be deined in the Data Bands / Symbols window varying according to the data values.

The Grid/Symbol Size is defined in terms of the units used in defining the Eastings/Northings - i.e. for mapping based on UK OS NGR, the unit will be 1km.

Reference Grid Size defines the spacing of the grid values included on the map margins.

By default, grid lines will also be drawn at the same spacing, but can be omitted (by ticking Omit Reference Lines) (e.g. if a background image is added in the Background dialog which itself includes grid lines).
