Known Issues

  • (All versions) When entering selection values and base/limit values for bands relating to text fields - the pull-down list is not always correctly adjusted when the first character is typed.
For an unknown reason, this seems to only occur when 'n' or 'p' are entered. Entering a second character does adjust the list accordingly.

Proposed (Possible) Enhancements

  • Facility to remember recently opened Project files and basic options between sessions.
  • Enhance Import to allow data to be read directly from an Excel spreadsheet.
  • Facility to Import Field Definitions, Data and/or selected Settings from another .DMR Project File.  e.g. combined with the change made in v1.4.1 to save a map as Background Settings would allow a map from one project to be used in a different project.

Version 1.4.2 (Build 26) Bug Fixes

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2012 r2.1 (20 January 2015)

Beta Test Changes from v1.4.1.24

  • Correctly save Key Text when saving Settings.
  • Added option to omit clickable shadow behind Symbols included as Ground Overlays in KMZ Exports.  This can help with large KMZ files by reducing the number of KML elements in the file.

Version 1.4.1 (Beta) (Build 24) Enhancement

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2012 r2. (3 March 2013)

Beta Test Changes from v1.4

  • KMZ Export Settings have now been added to the Save and Reload Settings dialogs.
  • KMZ Export Key Overlays were heavily pixellated in the original release.  This was traced to a problem within Google Earth during the rendering of the image.  As a work-round, the Key symbols and text are now drawn as one overlay with a coloured backdrop as a separate overlay.
  • Text in KMZ Key Overlay is now centrally aligned witht the symbols.
  • The 'Centre on NGR Precision' option for Placemarks in Exact Mode, caused different symbol placement from the normal default within the main mapping function. This will therefore be made into the 'option', with the 'default' being to place the symbol at the specified position with no adjustment.
  • Plotting of placemark symbols for 'Exact' mapping is now done in the order defined by the 'Plot Order' in the Data Bands window. In the previous test version, the order was not enforced and was at the discretion of Google Earth.
  • The Info Bubble layer in the KMZ export has been removed and the bubble is now accessed from the Title Overlay entry in the folder structure.

Other Bug fixes

  • If the last Data Band Base contraint is '>=n' (n being a numeric value) then a value 'equal to n' was not being plotted correctly.  This has now been corrected.
  • If the installed Help pdf is not found (e.g. if removed or moved after installation), the error caused by opening the missing Help file from the main menu is now being trapped correctly.

Cosmetic Changes

  • On opening the application, the main window is now centred in the screen (as were other windows).
  • In Map Window, a cursor location expressed as an OS NGR is now restricted to a more sensible precision.
  • The 'Count' Aggregation option has been renamed as 'Count Records' to make its meaning clearer (as opposed to 'Count Distinct').
  • In Data Bands, the pull-down lists for setting band boundaries for Text data were not being sorted correctly.  These are now sorted alphabetically.

Enhancements

  • In the Map Window, the menu option to Save to File has been simplified to remove the options of 'Key Only' and 'Map Only', and a new option has been added to Save the Map as a set of Background Settings for later re-use.
  • On opening the application, DatMapR now checks whether a later version is available for Download.

Version 1.4 (Beta) (Build 23) Enhancement

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2012 r2. (27 January 2013)
  • A facility has been added to DatMapR to Export map details to a KMZ File for use in Google Earth.

Version 1.3 (Build 22) Live Release

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2012 r2. (25 January 2013)

Version 1.3 (Beta) (Build 20) Enhancement

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2011 r4. (29 December 2012)

Main enhancements

  • A facility has been added to allow users to define their own 'Icons' to be used alongside the pre-defined Symbols.  The Icons can be based on any image file and can include transparent areas, and mask colours to be replaced by transparency or by variable 'band' colours.  Icon details can also be saved along with other settings.
  • The Data Band Initialization process for text fields has been rewritten to provide a more meaningful facility.  The initialization is now based on a series of consectutive unique text values taken from the data.
  • The order in which data is plotted on the map is now more flexible to allow control of overlapping symbols and icons when mapping in Exact mode.   Previously the data was plotted from high to low values (by default), or optionally low to high values.  Options have now been added to plot the data from north to south (or S-N or W-E or E-W).
  • The background image can now (optionally) be saved along with the settings.  Previously, (and now by default) only the file path/link was saved, which caused problems if the project file and settings needed to be used on a different computer.  The complete image can now be saved.
  • Colour selection boxes can now be 'tabbed' into (as with other controls), and the colour-picker can then be opened using the space bar.
  • Clicking on the Map Window now adds a cross hairs at the location as well as displaying information about the underlying data.  These remain on screen after the mouse button is released (previously they then disappeared), and they only disappear if the map is dragged, scrolled or zoomed.
  • The Help pages have now been produced as a stand-alone PDF document which can be accessed or downloaded from the web-site, and which is included in the installer package and is accessible from the application's Help menu.

Minor Changes

  • Dragging the Map Window no longer 'jumps' but gives a smooth movement.
  • The 'hand' cursor used within the Map Window has been changed to allow more precise selection of symbols.
  • The order of some controls has been changed, notably the NGR and E/N boxes for defining Map Area and the area covered by a Background image.  Their function has not changed.
  • Error checking of E/N values has been improved where they relate to OS NGR locations.
  • Build Number is now shown in the Splash Screen and Help>About for all versions not just test versions.

Version 1.2 (Build 15) Enhancement

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2011 r4. (9 November 2012)
  • A Browse facility has been added to the Project Window.  This allows you to examine the data that is currently loaded into the Project File.

Version 1.1.2 (Beta) (Build 14) Cosmetic Enhancements

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2011 r4. (8 November 2012)
  • The main use of a Background Image is to add a base map which may or may not cover the same area as the defined map. The 'Crop' option in the Background/Overlay window has therefore been made to be the default option.  The text has been amended slightly, but the function has not changed.  The Fit and Stretch options also behave as before.
  • Minor change to loading/saving/loaded/saved messages in Save and Reload Settings windows.
  • Opening a Project File by Drag-and-Drop or Double-clicking now correctly sets the number of records in the Project Window

Version 1.1.1 (Beta) (Build 13) Bug Fix

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2011 r4. (28 May 2012)
  • Mapping in Grid mode using a non-integer Grid Size (e.g. 0.1km) was somtimes mapping data to the wrong grid square due to rounding errors in the coding. This has now been corrected.
  • Import - an incorrect warning that Fixed Fields were overlapping has now been corrected.
  • Import - when no data fields were defined for import, the program should have loaded a dummy value of "1" into the first field.  This is now being done correctly.
  • Background Preview is now being updated whenever the window is reactivated, thus allowing for the fact that the map area may have been changed in the meantime.

Version 1.1.0 (Beta) (Build 12) Minor Enhancements

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2011 r4. (3 May 2012)
  • Field Names, Content flags and Field Descriptions can now be editted from the Import window where they were previously only shown for information.
This allows the details to be amended at the same time as fields are being chosen for import.
  • Option added to import to treat blank data in a field as a valid 'blank' value (as currently) or as a 'null' value.  A 'blank' value for a numeric field is treated as 0, which can affect an 'Average', a 'null' value would be excluded.
A 'null' value will also be excluded from 'Count'.
  • 'By-Line' added to the Map Formatting options, defaulted as 'Mapped using DatMapR' but available for editing (or removal) by the user.
This is defaulted to a small font (6 point), and is added outside the right margin of the map.
  • Option in Map window to Save 'Map Only' has been amended so that saved map can be based on specified Map Area, rather that a slightly oversized area designed to cater for 'Exact' mapping at the very edge of the map.  This simplifies the use of such a map as a Background for adding more data.

Version 1.0.2 (Beta) (Build 11) Bug Fix and Minor Changes

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2011 r4. (27 April 2012)
  • Added facility to allow selection of data records using NGR Precision (where location data was imported as OS NGRs).  'NGR Precision' has been added to the pull-down list for the 'Select where' contatriants in the Main window.  This will (e.g.) allow the user to exclude data with 'insufficient' precision.
  • 'Set All' to set Base Operator values in the Data Band window was causing a cascade of nested changes in the validation of the band definitions.  This locked up the application for a considerable time.  It has now been corrected.
  • The 'Count Distinct' aggregation option was not showing correct data value when the user clicked in the Map window to check a symbol value.  The data was in fact being mapped correctly.  The display has been corrected.  (A (perhaps) related problem where 'Count Distinct' showed incorrect values in the 'Check Data' option of the Main window, cannot be reproduced!)

Version 1.0.1 (Beta) (Build 10) Bug Fix and Minor Changes

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2011 r4. (22 April 2012)
  • Added 'Count Discrete' to the Grid Aggregation options, allowing the option to count the numer of records ('Count') or the number of discrete values in the selected records ('CountDistinct') - e.g. with observation records containing a Species Names, 'Count' will give the number of observations, while 'CountDistinct' will give the number of species.
  • 'Sum' in now consistently selected as the default aggregation for a Numeric data field.  Previously 'Count' was initially selected, and later changed to 'Sum' if the Selected Data Field was changed to a Numeric field.
  • Tabbing into a control box now selects the text in the box, allowing it to be replaced easily.  Ctrl/C and Ctrl/V have also been enabled in data entry boxes to allow text to be Copied and Pasted.
  • When Parsing data in the Import window, the columns of the Parsed Data box now correctly show the selected data fields.
  • The 'Done' button in the Import window now warns if data has been parsed but not imported.  The user can then confirm that they want to leave to Import window without importing the parsed data.
  • In 'Grid' mode, setting the map area now sets the correct maximum Eastings and Northings for data lying on the inner edge of grid sqaures on the east and north edges of the area.  Previously, the maximum was set to the highest data value, and this data was effectively excluded from the mapping.

Version 1.0.0 (Beta Test) (Build 9)

  • Compiled with REALstudio 2011 r4. (10 April 2012)
